American Soldier

A. What is the most powerful image from the pictures printed in the Denver Post over the three weeks they published images from the year of coverage? Why?
I think the most powerful image was the picture on 22A because it is a picture of Ian Fisher sitting all alone looking down thinking about how this is going to be the rest of his life. The picture is just really moving because the way I interpret it sends me a strong message.

B. How do the images work together to tell a story?
These images work together to tell a story by showing Ian's journey form where he first began to where he finished his army journey. It has showed how much he matured over his time that he has served our country.

C. How do the captions enhance the photographs?
The captions enhance the photographs by adding more detail and sending more of a message than the actual story itself can tell.

D. Summarize the story of Ian Fisher, based just on the captions.
Ian Fisher is beginning to start his career by enlisting into the army, he keeps getting cold feet here and there. The time comes and Ian has to say his goodbye's so he can begin with his new career. Ian felt a little uncomfortable at first, but he then got the feeling of the basic training. They have been training for 6 weeks, and an improvised explosion device hits the squad. That drill didn't go too well. After a little more time spent training, the Sergeant got attached to some of the men, including Fisher. More weeks of training go by and they can finally be rewarded be rewarded their blue cord, which means that they have completed training. More training comes and he is assigned a different post that now involves weapons and hiding behind a bush. Fisher is rewarded another pin for crossed-rifles. They are  moved to another training spot that is really close to where Ian lives and his friends want to see him. Ian is seen doing something improper with is weapon and is told to do push-ups, sit-ups, and run. He gets a weekend break and he proposes to Kayla. During an attack drill, Fisher doesn't participate due to injuries, but he does participate in the training for it. After a few weeks of tiresome and intense training, Ian returns home and puts on the table to his dad that he suffers from a drug addiction. Ian Fisher comes home from Iraq, which then leads to him having a party and getting engaged to his new girlfriend/ now fiance, Devin.

E. For the photos in which Ian is the main subject of the photos, in what tense are the verbs usually written?
When Ian is present and is the main subject of the picture, the first sentence of the caption is written in present tense and the second sentence of the caption is in past tense.

F. Break down the captions:

1. How many sentences are they on average? The captions are normally 2-3 sentences long.

2. Read the first sentence of a couple of them, what information do they provide? The first sentence of a caption describes who is in the photo, where the pictures is taken, why it was taken, and what's happening in the picture.

3. Read the second sentences of a couple of them, what information do they provide? The second sentence of the caption tell the reader the background that can't be figured out just by looking at the picture.

4. If there is a third sentence, what information does it provide? The third sentence of the caption provides a quote or more details about the picture.

5. Do any captions include a quote? Some caption can have quotes embedded into them.

6. Are there any that have four sentences? No, captions do not contain 4 sentences.

G. Why do you think it is possible to tell a complete story with just photos and captions? I think it's possible to tell a story with just pictures and captions because pictures show what's going on and the words can provide more information about what's going on.

H. If you can create a story with just photos and captions, why bother writing a story at all? I personally think people bother writing stories because they can provide more information and action that can grab the person reading the story's attention. Individuals can obtain more information from a story than just a picture with a few words beneath it.
